The news is out! A new bill was recently filed in the state of Washington that could potentially pave the way for legalized psilocybin, more commonly known as magic mushrooms. The proposed bill, HB 1099, seeks to decriminalize psilocybin possession and use.
If passed, the bill would make Washington one of the first states in the U.S. to legalize the natural hallucinogenic drug, along with Oregon and Colorado which have already passed similar laws. The proposed law would not only decriminalize possession and use of psilocybin but also enable research into its potential therapeutic uses.
Psilocybin has been studied extensively in recent years and some studies suggest it can be beneficial for treating depression and anxiety as well as helping to reduce addiction symptoms. Medical experts have also noted that it has potential as a way to help people manage chronic pain without relying on opiates or other addictive substances.
Proponents believe this bill could be a major step forward for legalizing a substance that has long held negative stigma in popular culture. It should be noted, however, that the legalization effort faces an uphill battle due to opposition from law enforcement agencies who are likely to lobby hard against it.
It now looks likely that the “magic mushroom” will soon join marijuana, alcohol and tobacco as an accepted recreational substance available legally across much of the United States. And one thing is certain: if this bill passes, Washington State will become one of the leaders in progressive drug policy throughout America.
